Gumtree Fake Text?
I'm normally pretty clued up as to what fake and what's not but on this one I'm not sure.
I listed some wheels for sale on Gumtree and put both my mobile number down and email address.
I just had a text arrive and instead of it coming up with a number(as people unknown to me should) it came up with "Greg". I don't know anyone called Greg and the phone in question has no contacts in it as its used purely for selling. There's also no phone number attached if I select message details.
The message says;
Hi, I tried to call without answer.. I want to buy your ad from gumtree, please contact me at gregsh..........
What do people think?

Maybe you should contact him and find out a little more. It is not really that strange considering you posted an advert with that phone number.0

Because I don't want to end up either on a mailing list or having someone trying to scam me!
I just spent some time searching and found something that sounded similar;

Received an sms asking me to email sanfordtommy88 on gmail re my advert. as i ahd two on there wasnt sure which one so asked the question and got a reply asking me to email them.
when you click on it and reply i got no response from the emailer but did get a link sent to me to log into gumtree then asks aboutcredit card numbers. have come home and changed my password as obviously some scammer0 -
Doesn't sound legit to me. Wouldn't even bother replying. The only time i've ever seen a name in the recipient is when it's from a company or something. The replies spelling is also dreadful.0

Got the same recently when selling tyres on gumtree. Claimed they had tried to call me, but no missed calls.
Asked me to get in touch via an email address.
Just ignored it.0 -
I had similar when selling on Autotrader.
Text saying to email them. If it was real they would just ask the questionRemember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0 -
Thanks for the replies.
Just like you mentioned Scotsman, I never received the phone call I supposedly got.0 -
Of course it's a scam. Why would he want to "buy your ad", if it was genuine, he would mention the item (wheels), surely?
Delete, delete, delete!"I may be many things but not being indiscreet isn't one of them"0
