Abolish vat on school uniform

The boundary for VAT rating on children's clothes is seriously out of date as many posters have pointed out with their 12 year olds (and less) wearing size 12 shoes etc. My DS is in this league, and even DD who is smaller than average wears clothes and shoes above that limit!

However, the whole idea of zero-rated clothing helping parents clothe their children seems to negated by the growth of designer labels carrying outrageous price tags, while some parents are happy to pay for it.

However, back to uniform, those who can buy plain uniform from chain stores in a size under age 14 seem to be the only winners. Badged clothing, in my experience, is inferior quality and expensive. We got around the badge issue by buying the badges separately and sewing them onto plain chain store or market buys. Sadly, the school caught on and hiked up badge prices, changing the logo first!!

I agree with the poster about Trutex, and I don't think this is a new thing either. Many moons ago when I was at school, the uniform was so expensive (and exclusively available at one outlet by one manufacturer) we didn't actually have any other clothes - I wore my blazer at weekends!! Hard to believe now!!
