Does your dad, an ex builder, really like "tins and preserves"? It's all a bit twee/middle class sounding.
He'd probably prefer some tinnies, or a bottle of the hard stuff - and maybe chuck in some Lynx and socks.
Tins & preserves at Christmas aren't middleclass, what a strange thing to say.
I think most people like to treat themselves a little at Christmas.
I think the only way you can give food as a gift at Christmas & make it like a hamper rather than a food parcle is to use nice things, treats.0 -
my in-laws have always given us a home-made hamper - they buy us things they think we would like - and now they've started doing it for the kidsproud gran to 4 lovely boys and one little girl0

My parents have done this for me every xmas since I left home.
They send us £50 tesco gift card which we use to stock the food cupboard up with and buy some posh cat food with.
It is always a huge help.0 -
I've made hampers for the family for years. When we were very hard up I made jams and pickles, biscuits and sweets. These days I buy nice biscuits, tea bags, coffee (if they drink it), chutneys, relishes, jams, honey, biscuits for cheese, some lovely chocolates, herbs & spices. Sometimes I add a small recipe book or some vegetable or salad seeds for them to grown their own next year. Everyone loves them.Nothing is truly lost until your mum can't find it!0
