I moved in March and npower didnt send me a final bill at all, I asked loads of times then made a complaint. After this I relieved a letter saying as they had no kept their end of the bargain in terms of when they get bills out, they were wiping my bill. Today, however, i got a letter saying I owed them money for my final bill and they would write to me to let me know what it is. I called them and they say I owe them £701!!!! I asked them about the letter and they said it was sent in error and I had to pay it.
Can they do that? I've put in a complaint and am waiting to hear. But I have it in writing I don't have to pay anything, can they legally go back on that? Help!

Do you still have the letter confirming they have waived their final bill?

If so, could you please post a copy here (removing any personally identifiable info first)
Perhaps you have misinterpreted what they wrote.
But with seeing the letter, I would probably be able to give you more firm advice.

Did you ever receive any notification previously that such letter was sent in error? If so, please post a copy of that too.

Letter from Npower (I was not previously billed at all as paid by direct debit and had no previous bill)

    Dear Blah blah....
We previously supplied you with gas and electricity at address, though we appreciate the account was closed over 6 months ago. Due to problems with our system at that time, we were unable to send you a statement covering your final billing period with npower. I'd like to offer my sincere appologies for this; its not the kind of service we strive to offer our customers.
We know its time to put things right so heres what we've decided to do. Any outstanding balance specifically related to your final billing period with npower has been written off. Please accept this letter as confirmation of that, theres now no need to send you a final statement.
Right now theres nothing you need to do. If we need to work with you to clear an outstanding amount on your account, we had previously billed you for, we will be in touch.
    Sincerely, npower

I prefer to see clear images of the actual letter if you don't mind :)

    Edit:
Could you post a complete image of the latest bill too please.
The final letter of that paragraph hints at something ;)

You need to photograph it or scan it, then host it somewhere (lots of places you can do that free, just google) then post a link to it.

Well ask them for it if they expect you to pay £701 ;)

I suppose they think not sending you a bill for an amount they now expect you to pay makes up for the fact they sent a letter they say they never should have.
