Recommendations for a high end digital compact camera

  • Thanks for all the comments. The other option depending on the feedback was always to keep the current camera which I have had for about 2 1/2 years. It was really just to see if technology had increased enough in the intervening period to justify the expense.

I am also aware that my skills as a photographer are pretty basic, so have already been to the library and will browse the web looking for ways to hone my skills.

Thanks again to all who posted - time for some pondering.

Think that the last poster hit the nail on the head with what a professional can do, compared to the ordinary snapper.

Do you really need to upgrade your camera or hone your skills a little better on what you can do with it? It's a really good camera that you have. You might like to read a little into getting the best from your camera. I bought some good books by Tom Ang from TheBookPeople.com a good while back

I remember when I bought my last camera, and it was a choice between the one you have, or the Panasonic TZ30...I went for the latter, because I already had a Panasonic bridge camera and really liked it, but too big to carry about all the time.
My bridge camera is a few years old now, it's the FZ38. I won't be changing either camera soon.

    How true.

We used to have a monthly photographic competition at work, it was an international comp. thanks to the world wide company Intranet with hundreds of entries each month.

First prize was the very prestigious honour of choosing next months subject. :T

One of my colleagues based in Leeds was a regular winner with pictures from his Canon 350D. He eventually decided to buy himself one of the professional Canon DSLRs as he was getting more and more into photography. Another regular winner was an American using high end pocket camera.

He never won the competition again after starting to use the 'better' camera. After much discussion we all decided that was because he knew his old camera inside out and knew exactly how to get the best from it and from himself. He knew its strengths and weaknesses.

I'm sure given time he'd have won using the new camera but he bitterly regretted selling the 350D on eBay for not much money.
One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.
