We have to put a repeat prescription in to the surgery at least 2 full days before it's needed. If the prescription is then sent to a pharmacy (rather than collected from the surgery), it takes at least another day before it's ready for collection.

That is what happens at my surgery as well.

If I need a prescription for a Tuesday I order it a week ahead.

All that complaining will do is in future they will tell you it's 3 days before you can collect instead of one day, which you knew already.

Just order earlier, I would never leave essential medication that late, and if I had to I would go to another pharmacy to ensure it was there on time, instead of using my usual, tardy one.

i usually give a weeks notice for my repeat prescription - fill the form in at the pharmacy and go for it a week later - any earlier and sometimes it wasnt ready - sometimes it was the GP's fault, sometimes it was the pharmacy

Have a look at the free repeat services most chemists do. That way the prescription is prepped a few days before it is required giving them time to order in if required

Our surgery dispense our medicines as we are in a rural area.

We still have to give 2 days notice for a repeat prescription.

Hmm. I sympathise with OP a bit. I have a repeat prescription which is filled by the pharmacy next to the doctor - so all I have to do is turn up to the pharmacy and get it when it is due.

Except the last time I went, they didn't have it when it was meant to be available. So they said sorry, they'd failed to request it, and it would take 2 working days. I said that's fine, I have a week left.

I went back a few days later (almost a week) and asked for my repeat. They *still* didn't have it. The cashier on duty was incredibly dismissive about it, saying that I'd just have to wait another two working days. I had to kick up a bit of a fuss to get to speak to the pharmacist because all the cashier would say was that there was nothing they could do. The pharmacist finally appeared and gave me a seven day advance - but this is surely something that the cashier should have known was possible. I was not impressed.

So things do go wrong in this area. Not commonly, but it does happen.

You could use the EPS system and have the prescriptions transmitted to one of the postal pharmacies. However, the underlying problem is ordering items with sufficient time for any problems to be dealt with. Yes, some pharmacies are incredibly inefficient and slow, but there are also occasions when a med is difficult to source.

I agree with everyone else re: ordering early. What if the pharmacist doesn't have an item in stock or there is a shortage of a particular medication? I am on two very common medications and there have been manufacturing/stock issues with both of them over the last couple of years. Luckily I order early so had the time to ring every pharmacy in the area to see if anyone had any of the old stock.
  • I have the opposite problem most times!

My pharmacist dispenses much earlier than necessary! I get two months worth of medication, and they know this as I tell them every time, but they pick up and dispense usually 3 weeks after I pick one up. Then I get letters demanding I pick it up or they'll cancel it.
