USD/GBP Paypal D/D payment from Nationwide.

Yesterday I made a Paypal payment of $15 (£9.85) which will be paid by Direct Debit from my Nationwide FlexDirect account.
On making a routine check of my current account balance this morning, I note that my available funds differ by £15.00 and not £9.85.
The immediate thoughts here are that some confusion has arisen between US Dollars and Sterling.
I've made a number of searches to see if the problem is known, but haven't come up with anything.
It will probably work out correctly in the end but just seems a little odd.
Has similar happened to anyone else, I wonder?
Thoughts and shared experiences will be gratefully received.

My initial thoughts is the transaction is not a "Direct Debit".
Did you pay using dollars and Nationwide paid Paypal in dollars? If so there is probably a fee to do that and that is added to the £9.85 you have estimated it will cost.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

This is all rather embarrassing. I can account for the £15; it relates to a completely different transaction altogether.
I am grateful for you taking the time and effort to respond HappyMJ.
Light had dawned and I was just about to set the matter straight but you were extraordinarily quick off the mark.
I'm under a number of domestic pressures, not least looking after my aged Dad, so sometimes my ability to concentrate on other matters is affected.
My apologies once again, but thank you for having the kindness to help so quickly.

My understanding is that PP convert $ to £ and then take £ by a DD. PP conversion fee is unlikely to be more than 3-4%.My initial thoughts is the transaction is not a "Direct Debit".

If it was a PP+(debit card) transaction, then again, no way £10 can turn into £150 -

My immediate thought would be that you should check your paypal account

Scoly and grumbler, could I respectfully refer you to my Post #3?
My embarrassment knows no bounds.
Thanks everybody.0 -
Oh well there's a thread open on Paypal and DDs. Hope it's OK to tag along.
I wanted to do a l large withdrawal on a PP acct that had no linked bank acct. So I verified the acct via their 1p payment method. Now I notice there's an email from PP saying I've set up a direct debit  !
Was not planning on that.
Option 1 is to remove the acct again, but I may need to do another withdrawal soon. And I've heard that after x times, it's no longer possible to link the same bank acct. In which case, how would I ever withdraw money from Ebay sales?0 -

Don't panic!! That's how it works
Should you ever need to fund that PayPal account, or pay for something from eBay, you can now do so by using the DD you've set up. It is however purely a manual process, so PP won't take a DD unless you request them to.
If you read some of the threads concerning 'dummy' DDs for various high interest paying current accounts, you'll see PP mentioned.

What happens if a hacker gets my Paypal password?
Previously the worst that could happen is my credit card gets debited, so no sudden overdraft. And credit cards offer some protection (can do a reclaim on Paypal for example).
Now, if a hacker gets the PP pw, they can do a very large transaction and the first I know of it is, I've hit my overdraft limit, am being charged big bank fees and my genuine DDs are being refused.
Or have I misunderstood this?0
