If you're already on work why would you leave for a job for 6 weeks ?

  • I think the word your looking for ginger is "arrogant", this person thinks that they are better than everyone else because they are a "scientist", well laa dee daa!, maybe they should "get a grip"

A lot of employers expect you to pay for your first uniform, I work at KFC & I had to pay £60 for my uniform, but that was taken out of my wages at £20 per month, you don't see me !!!!!ing about it now do you, I had to pay for it, simples!

I think that would annoy me. A suit is ok as you can use it at another job but making you pay for a KFC uniform which you can only wear if you are working at a KFC would be very irritating.

    I'm not already in work.

As a matter of interest whats you're other job offer?

The one you've mentioned here seems pretty bad e.g. only 6 weeks on minimum wage and you have to buy a suit.

Unless the other job is something really bad it would probably be sensible to take that one.

I can see why you are reluctant to buy a suit if you've never going to use it again. The only thing I would disagree with is that it's not a uniform. There is a difference between a work's uniform and a works dresscode. Therefore I don't think the employer is breaking any legislation if they lend you money for a suit (and take the money out of your salary), and the repayment take your salary below minimum wage

The other offer is with Tesco. Again a temporary job but also with a slightly higher wage - even ignoring the cost of the suit I may or may not need to buy (obviously Tesco provide a free uniform).

The reasons why I'd prefer to work for this original company is that there is a potential to get a wage increase, and if I manage to stay on after Christmas it will increase significantly.

    I agree RE: uniform/dress code.

I would love to hear how I think I'm "better than anyone else" because I will be a scientist...

That's alright then. Otherwise every fancy dress party you would have to go as KFC man ;)

So your decision is whether to take the Tesco job with the free uniform or invest in the suit to have the better job. Only you can make that decision.

Although to be honest if they insist on a suit you will almost certainly get away with just trousers, shirt and a tie. I doubt they would be that strict over a suit jacket.

And I'm not asking anyone to help with that decision (well, since post number 2 anyway!). I am merely responding to a group of people who butted in and started judging me because I don't want to buy a suit.

That's my thinking - it's what I wore to the interview. I was just asking in case they do make a fuss over the suit jacket in case I could have used it to back my corner in an upcoming pay review.
  • you seem to have a high opinion of yourself & also think that getting something that an employer asks you to get is not acceptable

I have a red shirt & black trousers, but that doesn't mean I can wear them to work now does it

If you have the offer at Tesco then take that, but be careful of the "free uniform" spiel, as it is free to get it but like me you may have to pay it out of your wages

Complete and utter rubbish. I've made zero comments on this thread that could remotely come across as me being "better" than other people. I did not say it was "unacceptable", I said it was unappealing to me.

No Tesco do not charge for their uniform. Just like virtually no retail chains do.
