cat proof garden

Has anyone managed to make their garden cat proof, to keep cats in?

  • I'm part way through this process at the moment. I've attached builders straps (from wickes about £2 something each and about 18" long) at regular intervals along the fence near the top and attached netting (securing it to the fence so there's no gaps). Most of the garden is done and so far it's keeping my 5 month old kitten in. He is only allowed outside under supervision at the moment though!

yes you need prison type fencing where the top bends inwards so they cant get out.
otherwise if it is small just make a frame and cover it in netting including the roof

No, but I have trained the cat not to leave the garden. not easy - took me months. first started with him on a harness and lead, then let him wander round the perimeter. every time he went to jump over - told him no and took him back indoors for a 'time in'. then during the summer would sit outside with him and watch him and sternly say 'Barney NO' if he tried to escape! I did have to run after him and catch him and give him 'time in' a few times.
I can trust him now not to leave the garden and he wanders in and out at will.
  • Thank you, just thinking about it for a friend who's just lost a very much loved cat on the road.
Garden is mostly 6 ft panels but has a wild area at bottom with open post and rail type fence.
Just looking for ideas, there are custom made kits but seem quite expensive.
