Put a new hard drive in enclosure or get a complete external hard drive?

I have a failed external USB hard drive that needs to be replaced.
The enclosure electronics are OK.
Should I just buy a new 1TB hard drive and put it in the enclosure or should I buy a completely new external USB hard drive?
And what are the most reliable now, Seagate or WD?

I usually buy the enclosures separately anyway. They're about £10.0

I have 3.5 and 2.5 externals and I much prefer the 2.5.
Laptop hard drives are much more sturdy than the desktop equivalents and you can put a 1TB external drive together for less than £50.
USB 3 is the way to go too.

Recently built a 1TB HDD into one of those, a good brand, cheap and cheerful, but does the job nicely.
The main advantage of building your own is you know the quality of the drive, where ready made boxes could contain any old sh*t.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”
