The hassle of getting air into your tyres

Is there a pump with an accurate gauge?
Yes - the Continenatal Mobility Kit as supplied by many car-makers instead of a spare wheel is an excellent example.
Even if you are not interested in the bottle of latex liquid that can be connected to it to seal a puncture, the compressor is the most compact, quick and efficient I have come across.
It's great for regular pressure checking.
It's an expensive piece of kit - well over £80 if you want to buy a new one from Ford, Audi, M-Benz, or BMW for example - but on eBay ......

(Like you suggest, I'm not interested in the gunk though - too much temptation to go over 50, I'd say.)0 -
I use a bike pump to top up pressures on my car tyres; the sort with a vertical cylinder and a base you put your foot on to keep it steady while pumping with both arns so it really isn't much effort.
This is no good for topping up tyres every week, but I think Morrisons still do free air if you buy fuel but you have to ask for the code when you pay.0 -

It is only advisory.
But some people need exactitude to avoid having to make decisions themselves, so 50 mph which is an approximate, arbitrary figure.....is used.
I don't suppose much would happen at 54 mph.
But, 70 mph might well prove to be a differnt story? No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......0 -
