Dodgy Dulux?

I've had a few problems with Dulux paints lately after using them on and off for years with no problem.
One paint I put on about 9 months ago has changed colour (from a very light grey to a weird pink) gradually over the period. I'm an old hand at painting and this is not normal fade with exposure to sun etc. the colour is completely different. I've been in touch with Dulux but they have been totally unhelpful they say it is a 'trick of the light' despite sending them photos etc. Utter nonsense!
I've recently bought Dulux's Apple White and it is very very thin (I've opened two different tins) and the coverage is very bad.

Have I been really unlucky or has anyone else experience a deterioration in their paints?

Thanks.

Dulux is my preferred choice of paint when it comes to Silk or Matt emulsions. I only buy the 2.5 or 5L tins and not the larger tubs that are usually on offer in the sheds as I find these to be thin. For gloss or satin wood I only buy Dulux Trade.

I am not the largest user by any means perhaps 25L of Matt or Silk a month and 2.5L of Satinwood but I can't say that I've noticed paint thinning in the last few months. Colour of the Silk I recently used was 10L Natural Calico and the Matt was 5L Dulux Once Urban Obsession.

My second choice of Crown Trade Matt / Silk also in my opinion has not changed in mix over the last few months.

  • Did you buy from a proper Paint Centre or from and DIY Store like B&Q, Wickes or Homebase?

They ARE different in quality depending on where you get them... Trust me !!!

Thanks for replies. I can't remember where I got the one 9 months ago, but the Emulsion Matt AppleWhite I got at B&Q.

I've used Crown and b&q's Colours paint recently and thought they were both excellent all bought in a DIY store. I've always prefered Crown or Johnstone what I can get it in the shade I want.

Interesting what has been implied about Paint Store vs DIY store purchases being different quality for the identical product, must say that has never crossed my mind as a possibility before. I live in the sticks a bit, so there are no proper paint stores for a long way, but I've usually bought in a DIY store anyway in the past.
How do you know that there are two grades of an identical Dulux paint, I'm very curious? I may contact Dulux in any case and ask them what they say about that possibility, could be interesting ...

    Thanks.

Mine and other peoples experience .
DIY store paints are generally aimed at that market, for DIY.
Paint Centre Paints are generally aimed at the painting and decorating trade. Think it is to do with the pigment in the different paints and how they dry. I've found through experience that the cheaper DIY store paint takes more coats to reach the required colour and is a LOT thinner. I think it pays for you to spend more on the paint from the Paint Centres...
  • Hi, I had a problem with a Dulux paint and wrote a letter of complaint. They sent me a letter as a voucher for a replacement tin. This was about a year ago.

When i opened the tin I could be it wasn't right. I mixed and mixed it thinking it would be ok but it had a terrible finish and started to lift and bubble as soon as it dried.

I have just had an issue with Dulux Apple White bubbling after applying it over Vinyl Silk. After an internet search the issue appears to be that I am putting it on to Silk and not a problem with the Apple White itself.

It's a case of having to "flat" off the vinyl silk prior to putting the matt on it:(
