Decisions decisions, should I have a steam cleaner for my birthday which is next week

I've been wanting a steam mop/cleaner for a while now and my other half said he will buy me one for my birthday which is next week but he has told me I may find it a faff to use as has one and never uses it, I have also heard other people say they are too fiddly to use and its quicker to use a mop and bucket or a cloth.

I do want it for the floors, though I don't have much lino flooring, I live in a flat and only have the kitchen, bathroom and hallway with lino and neither are large areas.

However, I do want one more for the tile grouting and things like that, I can never get the tiles clean with a cloth and cleaner and thought that a steam cleaner used about once a month or so will give it a good do and I can use a cloth inbetween. It would also be handy for doing the curtains and things like that. However, I know of people who have the cleaners and all the attachments and never use them.

I need to make a decision about this, I don't want to get a steam cleaner and not use it yet if they are really good I would like to get one, if they are a waste of time though I will ask the other half to buy me something else.

Can you borrow his for a week or so to see how easy it is to use and if you like it

I would make sure the steam cleaner can convert from a 'floor' cleaner into a 'hand held' - then it would be ideal. I have a steam cleaner - and its great for floors, carpets etc - but its too unwieldy for smaller areas.

I'd have his on a 'long lend'.;)

And then he can buy you a proper birthday present. A steam cleaner as a gift, whatever next!!

  • Try thinking of some other helpful stuff that you will surely use for a long period of time. There are lots of birthday presents you can ask from him, that will make your birthday a wonderful one. Not the one you're not even sure of using.

I would have thought this would be a necessity for the house, not for your birthday.

If anyone bought me anything like that they would be shown the door.

+1 for borrow one to try, whilst handing Himself a well thought through list of what you would Like to receive.

If I choose a gizmo for a present, I've chosen it thoughtfully. If I get given one, then he'd better have done the same homework as I'd do (ensuring fit for purpose, right price, all spares/consumables easy & reasonable to source) and have pipped me to the point of acquisition.

Or I get him a cheap box of drill bits & a nasty grin for his present.

So far, we're still married. And whatever gizmos we buy, are jointly considered. Which is why we are presently Between Printers (he doesn't see it my way yet!).
  • Thanks for your replies. Actually I asked him for a steam cleaner for my birthday but now I've asked for something like toiletries or make up as I am still undecided about getting a steam cleaner now so I am doing to sit on it for a while.
