'For sale' & 'To let' boards - can I remove them?

Hi,

There are about half a dozen 'For sale' & 'To let' boards outside my block of flats (privately owned) and these signs fixed to the railings outside look unsightly.

The terms of head-lease say boards can't be put up at all, but I can't ring every estate agent to ask each take down their respective board.

Can I remove them myself and bin them?

If you keep ringing them up, and they vanish, they know who to come looking for..

Chances are some (or all) of these boards have been erected illegally by agents - a common practice in London as the agents assume that everyone in the block will think it's someone else's sale. This is called fly-boarding.

You could try contacting your local authority planning office to see if they would care to check out the legality of the companies concerned.

Otherwise, this is the responsibility of the building management company /landlord to enforce the terms of the lease on those property owners infringing the terms of their agreement.

I believe there is a limit to the number of for sale boards that are allowed to be errected outside a property & am sure that it is a limit of 2 & certainly isn't over 3.

Any boards are supposed to be removed within 14 days of completion too.

As courtjester mentions, chances are some of those outside your block may be errected illegally.

Personally I would phone each individiual Estate/Letting Agency and say if they don't remove their boards within X amount of days then you will charge them for advertising!!! :rotfl:

Yes.

I use to live in a block of flats that had it clearly stated in the lease that estate agents' boards couldn't be put up. EA's ignored the rules so someone use to remove the boards when they were put up sometimes in a matter of minutes.

Even if they are allowed and you take them down the EA is unlikely to put them up again unless the person's flat they are advertising complaints.
