Where can I get old galvanised steel pipes like these, for a DIY furniture project? http://workshop.lifehacker.com/build-industrial-furniture-with-wood-and-pipes-1633320328

Architectural salvage yards may sell them but I suspect most people would sell them as scrap as salvage yards may have very few customers for them.
I don't think they are gas pipes. They are used as heavy duty trunking for electrical cables.

They're old style gas or water pipe. I hate working with the things. Any we remove and replace is just skipped, it's not worth the time and effort (for us) taking it to the scrap yard. Your best bet would still be the scrap yard though, the guys who drive around all day looking for scrap metal would weigh it in.0

With wrought iron fitting like that they are gas pipes.
Could also be ex steam pipes and also compressed air.
We installed these until the late 80's when viable plastics came along and steam went out of the window.I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Unless you have the facility to thread the pipes you won't be able to make anything with scrap lengths.
However you can hire the thread dies to do the job.
I was installing these pipes in the late 90's for compressed air supplies.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -
If you search for key clamp you might be able to use them.0

Malleable Iron Pipe
often used for steam and fluids /gas and still used today. As someone has said most people scrap it, if they happen upon it.
I had a load of the fittings could not sell them so scrapped the lot.0 -
If they are gas or water pipes how do you get an gas or watertight seal on the threaded joints?.0

We used copious amounts of ptfe tape. In earlier times we used to use a lot a hemp string and a product based on linseed oil mixed with a substance that I have forgotten the name of after 60years. I will edit if I think of the name.Norman_Castle wrote: »If they are gas or water pipes how do you get an gas or watertight seal on the threaded joints?.I can afford anything that I want.

Good point Col, I tend to take it for granted that everyone has the gear.
We dumped red band in the late eighties for ABS welded, come the millennium we went extruded ally, best option imhoI like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
