I need advice for my brother in law
He separated from his wife 18 months ago because serious debt came to light that she had occurred
Non payment of bill, non payment of Mortgage, (3 repossession orders on the house tat she borrowed money to clear) borrowing from friends and family and not paying back
My husband and I have been paying the mortgage since he left as the house was yet again going to be repossessed and we wanted something for their son when the house would be sold through the divorce.
The crux of this is - she passed away last week ( the divorce had not been finalised as she had not responded to any of the court papers.
The house is a complete mess not one piece of furniture can be saved and the internal will have to be pulled back to brick because of her neglect.
My brother in law has been to the bank and discovered she cancelled her life insurance on the mortgage so he is still liable for what is due and has also been told he will NEVER get credit because of the debts associated with her.
Now I know he has been stupid in trusting her with the money during the marriage but is there any way he can get credit in the future
Any advice will be appreciated

Yes it is likely he will be able to get credit in the future. Nothing on a person's credit file is permanent.
Depending on what exactly shows on his credit file at at the moment, it could well take 6years before all the negative entries are removed.
What are his plans with the house? is he still intending to sell? does he now own the whole house? or, if the house was owned as tenant's in common did wife have a will which left her share house to someone else?
I would suggest he doesn't agree anything with the bank until he has all the facts. And don't take their advice without seeking independant advice elsewhere.
For example I guess it is possible that his wife may have switched to a different life insurance company.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0
