Refund of Warranty

Good morning
I am hoping for some advice please.
At the weekend my wife bought a bike from Halfords. Yesterday the gears broke and she returned it and it was repaired and we picked up yesterday evening.
Since then we have discovered that the gears are still not working correctly and we are returning for a refund as she has had enough.
The part that I am worried about is that in addition to purchasing the bike we paid £40.00 for a three year warranty that covers servicing and all repairs.
Obviously we do not need that if we are returning the bike but the warranty itself isn't at fault.
I have tried to find information on whether or not we can get a refund on the warranty as well and under what grounds but I haven't been able to find anything.
Are we entitled to get a refund of the extra £40.00 we paid?
Any help would be much appreciated.

You usually get 45 days for a full refund on a warranty, and then a pro rata refund after that, provided you haven't used it.
If you have used it for the repair though, you may have a bit of an issue, but you should be alright.0 -
What do you mean bt "broke". Did they just need adjusting or had something actually broken?0

In highly technical terms, the bit of the gears that guide the chain when changing the front cogs had become caught in the chain and were then twisted to the point that the chain couldn't move.0 -

May not actually be a fault, front derailieurs can be a bit fussy. No point in getting another bike and still having the same problem due to technique.
Possibly but doubtful. The wife has been cycling to work for a number of years and is quite the careful cyclist.
Either way not overly impressed with Halfords or the bike at this point so wanting a refund and we will shop elsewhere.0 -

If Halfrauds try to claim that then I'd be getting very angry and loud in their store (if it was me). A warranty is only of any real benefit after 6 months from purchase - before that then any fault is presumed to be inherent and the seller must prove otherwise.0 -
Who set up the bike? The gears need to be perfectly aligned or the chain will jump off. Usually you can tell by all the clicking and clunking when changing gear that they are not set properly.0

Thank you all for the help and advice.
Surprisingly, to Halfords credit, it was not needed.
They were incredibly helpful and immediately offered a full refund of bike and warranty and then the manager offered that if we decide to go back to buy another bike to that we could have a more expensive model for the same price.
Thanks again.0
