Pen lid or similar on the keyboard when you shut the lid? Screen would look exactly like that afterwards, done it myself.

Nope, didn't notice anything like that!
  • Can anyone recommend any laptop brands or models with screens that might be more durable, I really can't afford to replace a laptop right now, but seeing as I am self employed and it's crucial I'll have to just add to the Argos Card balance and pay for it in a year (ironically I haven't paid for this laptop yet, that is going to be nasty).

If I'd screwed up somehow I'd hold my hands up, but !!!!!! if you can open a laptop and the screen breaks what is the point? I've had laptops for the last 15 years and this has never happened. There was the one I dropped to the point the screen was hanging off, but it still worked! Ironically that was an Asus which was why I bought Asus again thinking they built to last, how wrong was I!

I feel your pain but older laptops were a lot more robust.

Look at the current adverts, most make a big thing of how thin and light they are. What they don't say is how delicate this can make them.
One by one the penguins are slowly stealing my sanity.
  • Well if the VGA socket isn't going to melt down overnight I might just stick it through my TV for the time being, I can still do most things and if I plug a proper keyboard in even better (this Asus keyboard was the worst laptop keyboard I have ever come across).

Not buying anything else if it's going to break if I breathe on it, might look at refurbished older ones or something.

Ironically I had taken to watching tv etc on my laptop to save money, now I will have to have the big telly on all the time to work :(

As mentioned earlier, replacing the screen yourself is the cheapest way to sort this, under £50 and a small amount of your time :)

If you have been following the news recently, you'll find that iphone 6 are having similar "flimsy" issues...

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

I killed the screen on a Dell laptop by keeping it in a bag with a memory stick. A very gentle squeeze and the memory stick flexed the lid, which in turn cracked the screen giving exactly the symptoms you have. I replaced the screen (the parts were about 40 quid and it took half an hour to do) and then Araldited (is that a verb?) a piece of carbon fibre sheet to the lid, which made it immensely stiff. I never had the problem again. The current family laptops are all metal, but if I had another plastic one I'd do the same from new. As others here say, I've seen the same problem caused by flexing from opening and closing too; light, cheap laptops aren't very robust, and a lot appear to be intended for use around the house where they are left open most of the time.

As others have said, the photo shows a screen that has suffered physical damage.

My daughter got a new laptop almost a year ago; within 3 weeks the screen was damaged and looked very like what that photo shows ... she was playing her guitar whilst watching something on her laptop, she turned without thinking and the head of the guitar tapped the screen (hard enough to cause physical damage).

Fortunately screen replacements are usually not that exorbitant.

You seem to have denied all types of possible mis-handling except opening and closing the laptop in a less than optimum way.

From this I conclude that the damaged screen is due to poor handling on your part.

As others have said, get a replacement screen and fit it yourself for around £50.

Lol, poor handling. Did you read the bit where I've said I have had laptops for 15 years, used 12-15 hours a day? How many thousands of times will I have opened a laptop case during that time? All without breaking the laptoa!

As others have said, they make laptops flimsier these days - surely the idea is portability, so lots of lid closing and opening.

But it's my fault that they make the laptops so flimsy these days that one wrong move ruins the screen? And not even an obvious wrong move, one so subtle it wasn't even noticed?

I can accept maybe a wrong move I didn't notice, coupled with cheap, rubbish flimsy product, but I don't think it's fair to lay the blame 100% at my feet!
