100% wool berber carpet

Hi everyone,

Thinking about buying a carpet from Carpetright and wanted some advice on the carpet itself. I know the kinds of issues with Carpetright - silly 25//50/60% sales, expensive underlay/grippers, etc. What I'm looking for is some advice on the carpet itself more than anything - type, quality, durability/wear and respective cost per sq.m. This is for lounge and bedroom, medium use, would like something fairly comfy underfoot but with no pets and kids I'm more interested in the look and sympathetic within a Victorian conversion.

Carpets are:
Auckland Berber Sable: 100% wool, current list price £14.99 per sq.m.
Berber Deluxe Beige Rib: 100% wool, current list price £24.99 per sq.m.

The Auckland Berber seems very cheap. Any experience of this or similar carpet? Or is this related to the cheaper manufacturing costs of berber as the loops are not cut?

Would the second most expensive underlay, 9mm thickness, at £7.99 per sq.m. be ok?

Thanks.

You may find they have their own names on the carpet making it near impossible to compare - deliberately allowing them to say it's the cheapest price anywhere (because no one sells that named carpet)

Try a local independant shop, they sometimes seem dearer initially but once carpetright price up the fitting, underlay, gripperods, moving furniture and whatever else they sometimes dream up it may not be as cheap as initially thought.

Underlay seems a little pricey per sqm, I thought something like 9mm Cloud 9 was about £5 a sqm fitted but I might be out of touch.

Carpet right has many happy customers, go and talk to them , price EVERYTHING, and you may well find them the cheapest. Bulk talks.

    As for the comment

All the info is on the label
Calling a carpet a different name is not a problem

Its better to have a wool twist mix, as the little bit of man made fibre adds to durability.
Berber wool will rub up like an old jumper, the surface won t keep its look.

My wool twist on stairs and l room are 10 yrs old, the stairs need replacing soon, both cost at today's price 34.99 before sales discount... this just brings them in line with other shops.

Was just about to ask this questions as was thinking or using berber(loop pile) for the stairs and landing but the sales guy convinced me to go for twist for stairs and landing as well due the berber rubbing up on the middle of the threads on the stairs due to the traffic.
  • Berbers will only be 100% wool or 100% man-made. If they are a mix, such as 80/20, the man-made element will be shorter yarn and ultimately over time will 'pill' more. That is when the yarn starts to ball on the surface.
With regard to the two products, £14.99 sq/m for a wool carpet will mean the wool will be of poor quality and also probably short, so will inevitably pill also.
£24.99 sq/m seems a reasonable price for a wool/berber loop. It would be better to go with a twist on the stairs, but loops can be durable also. A lot will depend on the quality of the underlay as well.
As has been mentioned already, maybe try an independent for an alternative view. Don't necessarily rule out Carpetright, but explore all your options and remember it is the price of the carpet once fitting, underlay and bars are taken into account that matters, not just the carpet price.

Thanks aggypanthus and Feeling Blue, this was the kind of information I was looking for. I know how to price it up and compare sheds v independent, just wanted an opinion on this type of carpet and respective price, and your posts have been very useful.
  • I always research carefully and find carpetrights sales prices bring the price in line with another retailers. Buy your underlay elsewhere.

the clue when comparing other branded names will be in the colour name and description, not the carpet style name..cr will have known makers under a name just for them.
