How long can you go abroad when getting benefits

Hi everyone,

I'm getting tax credits and housing benefit. I'd like to know for how long can I travel abroad without effect on my benefits, and more importantly for how long can I travel without losing my benefits altogether (albeit with effect on them) ?

I think hb is 4 weeks and tax credits 8 but not 100% on that.

Thanks! It doesn't say whether the amount of tax credits is reduced though. Also what about housing benefit?

If you can afford to travel abroad for presumably a while, if it may affect your benefits, it brings doubt on whether you actually need the benefits.

HB has a 13 week rule, if you are away from the property for 13 weeks or more you will no longer be entitled to HB.

Are you getting working tax credits or child tax credits?

Presumably you will not be working while you are travelling?

take that bit and tell it to you MP if you have problems with people affording to holiday and work and get low income benefits.

you don't know the situation as whole.

you don't the how OP became to afford it.

so before we hear the marching band of benefit smashing, lets not speculate on anything and keep personal opinions to ourselves.

Don't want personal opinions don't post on a public forum.

If someone can potentially afford to go abroad whilst on means tested benefits, i.e. on a low income and the amount of time they could be abroad could affect the entitlement, it's a valid point.

Were I am benefit smashing? The post was at the OP.
  • Can't see where OP states they are paying for holiday, for all we know could be a relative/friend is paying. I went to a wedding in Cyprus few years back and I know family had a whip around to pay for some less well off but much loved cousins to attend

We don't even know it's a holiday, the op could be going to work.

Tom, it can be cheaper to go on holiday than to stay at home - £20 flights and staying with family, for instance.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

I'm not original poster but it could be me next year. I have a cousin living on the med. A cheap flight and contribution to food out there works out cheaper than 2 weeks at home.
