Hi

I received a letter from BT yesterday stating I owe them £250 to enable me to get out of my contract- I changed providers in August believing that I was out of contract, I was told that when I took up an offer of free upgrade to Infinity in December that I was re-contracted and I was now 8 months into an 18 month contract. I was not - to my knowledge made aware of a re-contract - can I dispute this?

Thanks
Nat

Normally any change of service with an ISP involves a new contract, free upgrade will always mean you are locked into a new contract to recovered the cost of the upgrade, otherwise as you have done you could just change provider anytime and they are losing money.
  • Currently, with all the main providers, an upgrade to fibre or faster broadband would start a new minimum term and currently that is 18 months across the board (virgin may be different and be 12 months).

They would normally confirm this on the call and/or send it out in writing. if you are sure you didn't agree to it and were never informed, either by post or at the point of sale, then it may be worth disputing.
