Look for something better at that price.

    Really?

What's wrong with it? What do you mean by better (I'm a technophobe) ?:o

    Better processor, perhaps better brand.

If you are stuck on it, it is cheaper here. £279
Perhaps take the three year warranty.

Better processor? Like what please? Sorry, I'm useless with all this technical jargon.

Which is a better make? Toshiba? Lenovo (sp), Sony? I haven't a clue :o

My personal opinion is that it could do what you wanted it to do, but it's not a great system and you will probably find it quite slow and unresponsive at times. It's the type of system that quite simply won't age very well and will probably need a clean install quite often otherwise it will get clogged down.

If you don't mind me asking, are you planning to purchase it from Very because of a BNPL or other credit deal?

If that were the case, although more expensive, I'd be inclined to suggest this http://www.very.co.uk/asus-x550ca-intelreg-coretrade-i3-processor-8gb-ram-1tb-hard-drive-wi-fi-156-inch-laptop-blue/1409524498.prd

You can also get this http://www.very.co.uk/lenovo-z50-70-intelreg-coretrade-i5-processor-8gb-ram-1tb-hard-drive-wi-fi-156-inch-laptop-with-optional-office-365-silver/1409812250.prd with a £100 credit (assuming you pay by BNPL) so it becomes £379.00 which would be more than adequate for your needs and is a pretty decent deal at that price (providing you pay it off before you incur interest charges).

I won't link it but there is also another Lenovo system on Very right now with the £100 credit for a BNPL purchase and a VAT cashback offer from Lenovo which makes the system cost around £425 (saving of around £204). I'm not linking it because it is massive overkill for what you want and also still quite a bit more expensive than what you originally suggested but I thought I'd mention it. It would be a really fast system but at the same time a lot of its power is wasted for general surfing and TV/Film watching.

Thank you very much for your informative reply. I only posted it from Very because it was the only purple one I saw and I do like purple :D, and thought to myself that I might get it; but seeing that you are saying exactly what I don't want to hear i.e. it can be slow and unresponsive - I'll pass on the purple one.

I don't mind spending up to about £400 for a good laptop and they don't have to be with "very". Can you recommend any please? One's that don't (as you say) are slow and unresponsive. The older I get the less patient I am. :o

Ooh I forgot to mention that I watch a lot of live streaming tennis matches, so anything that is suitable for that please.

Thanks again for your help.

Okay then. Well as I say, for £425 once you factor in all the discounts, this really is bloody good - http://www.very.co.uk/lenovo-z50-70-intelreg-coretrade-i7-processor-8gb-ram-1tb-8gb-sshd-hybrid-drive-wi-fi-156-inch-laptop-with-4gb-dedicated-graphics-and-optional-office-365-silver/1409811882.prd?_requestid=571235

Obviously it would be up to you to make sure you claim all those discounts, and it does rely on you taking out finance on Buy Now Pay Later, and then paying it off on time (so as to avoid the interest which will erase all your discounts, but you'll have 12 months to pay it off). But you won't really get a faster laptop at that type of price. The Core i7 is a low-power dual core ultrabook version, the 8GB RAM ensures a speedy experience, it has a Full HD display at 1920 x 1080 (good for watching pretty much anything) and it has an SSHD which is faster than a standard hard drive as it puts your most frequently used applications (such as your operating system, browser etc.) into a special flash memory sector.

It also has a dedicated graphics chip, which is very useful in some situations as graphically intensive tasks are moved to the graphics chip to minimise load on other resources - this is only really noticeable in games and design applications though.

I actually do own that laptop and it really is very snappy. What I will say though is that mine originally came with a faulty keyboard so I had to get it replaced - Lenovo dealt with that themselves though and it's all been fine since then.

And as I say, it really is overkill for what you want to use it for so you kinda have to decide whether the £25 over-budget is really worth it. However, for what you're using it for, I wouldn't imagine you'd need to replace it any time soon.

    Under £400 we've got http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/hp-pavilion-15-p078sa-15-6-laptop-white-10011492-pdt.html#cat-0

8GB RAM which is again good. Standard mechanical drive which is slower than the SSHD in the one above. But other than that, suitable for your needs.

    There's also this - http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/computing/laptops/laptops/acer-aspire-e5-571-15-6-laptop-black-10011066-pdt.html

It's better than the one you linked in the original post without being too expensive (and I haven't shopped around to check if it is cheaper). My only issue with this is the 4GB RAM - it's kinda bare minimum these days. I had a decent system running 4GB for a while and there was a significant performance increase when I jumped it up to 8GB, so I tend to go with 8GB as a minimum these days but in complete fairness, I do perform slightly more intensive tasks than you will with yours so it may not be too much of an issue.

My personal advice would be aim for a bare minimum of an Intel Core i3 processor if you can. 8GB is preferable as far as RAM goes, but you would likely be okay with 4GB to be honest. Hard drive wise, most come with 1Tb which is more than adequate for most people, at least in a laptop. An SSHD is better than a standard HDD, but you don't generally get them at lower price points, with the exception of the first one I mentioned. You probably don't need dedicated graphics. Display wise most come with a 1366 x 768 display (which is a HD display, though not full HD).

The "i" series processors go i3 as entry level, i5 as mid-level, i7 as high level.

Pretty much the same as the previous options (save for the i7 laptop I linked first) in most respects. You can save £30 by buying a version with only 4GB memory.

I haven't really checked these prices elsewhere so it is possible there are better deals out there.

Thank you so much Tropez. I'm going to buy the one from John Lewis with 8gb of ram on it. You are right, it's got a wonderful write up and from John Lewis it's even more reasonable than from other places, plus a 2 year guarantee.

Thank you for your hard work.
