Credit rating

A friend of mine, on my recommendation, used the MSE energy club to switch supplier from Scottish Power to Eon.
Late in the process Eon informed him that he needed to pay £400 to have a pre-payment meter installed because of his credit rating.
He currently pays monthly by budget payments on a credit meter and is owed about £500 by his current supplier He does owe money on three unseecured debts but is keeping up the payments and has never defaulted on his fuel payments or council tax. He has direct debits set up for Council Tax and with Virgin Media and is willing to do the same for Eon.
Naturally he hasn't got £400 up front nor does he want a prepayment meter.
As he changed on my advice using MSE Energy Club I would like to find a way out of this for him.

Any advice, please?

    Hi actomox1,

We sometimes ask you to pay a security deposit when you join E.ON or move into a property that we already supply. If we ask you to pay a security deposit we’ll charge you £200.00 for each fuel.

It sounds like we’ve asked your friend to pay this after the credit check, we’ll either ask customers to pay a security deposit or have a prepayment meter fitted, we wouldn’t ask for both.

If after the first 12 months you don’t have any debt outstanding and you haven’t had any debt collection take place for nonpayment in the last 6 months, we’ll refund you the deposit back.

I’m sorry but there isn’t any other way, than paying the security deposit or having prepayment meters fitted.
