Advice on online purchase return

Hi I bought a fish tank lid online. It's arrived and inspite if me measuring carefully it doesn't fit.
I want therefore to return it, the company charged me over ten pounds to send it out, and want me to pay my own return cost they will then give me a refund minus 25% of the cost.
Do I have any way of sorting this without losing my money?
Thanks in advance.

You never know how strong you are until you have no other option.

Consumer Contract Regulations allow you to cancel within a certain time frame, but you have to pay the postagePrivate Parking Tickets - Make sure you put your Subject Access Request in after 25th May 2018 - It's free & ask for everything, don't forget the DVLA0

You may be entitled to a full refund if your item is not as described as in the description, however if it is showing signs of use the seller is entitled to deduct an amount from the refund. The seller is also obliged to refund the basic postage cost of sending the goods to you, but not your return postage costs. You didn't give enough information in your OP.
1) was the item made to your specifications (i.e you entered dimensions and they made it just for you), or did you pick from a list of preset sizes?
2) Is the item the size you requested (and you measured incorrectly), or is it a different size?
3) Did you order from a UK company, or a foreign one?0 -
As well as the questions asked above, can you also say when the thing was delivered to you?0
