Changes to Road Tax

My son bought a second hand motorbike in October and was told by the seller the road tax was valid until March. We checked the gov.uk website when he purchased it and the road tax was valid. Since the disc display was discontinued, it seems they automatically refund the former vehicle keeper with the road tax whether requested or not. Once the V5 was submitted his road tax became invalid. He was not informed by the DVLA and only by chance did we find out. The tax had been stopped for a month without his knowledge!
Hope this helps someone.
