Are they scared you might not come back?

    No, I don't hate them.
Many's the time I've accidentally almost logged off or closed a page. especially on a phone or tablet with a small touch screen and been glad of the opportunity to cancel the request.

It's more hassle (especially if it is something like online banking with several steps needed to sign in) than just clicking one thing to confirm you want to log off

On a phone, just entering a password is a pain, with the keys being so close together.

I think the reason they encourage you to sign off is imagine if you shared a computer. There maybe someone who'd use a works computer or even worse a computer at a local libarary to check their bank details. If you didn't make a point of logging out of the site the details could be seen by the next user.

If there is session data involved, then you would likely lose all that too if you accidentally closed the page - potentially meaning you had to do a LOT more than just log in again (depending on what you were doing of course)
