Laminated £5 note - Is it worthless?

Hi All,
To cut a long story short, my mate thought it would be a good idea to laminate my £5 note before returning it to me. I saw the joke...it was funny!
Since, I took it to my bank to see if they would either exchange it or pay it in to my account. Although it is perfectly laminated flat the cashier told me that he could not confirm to authenticity of the note. This resulted in the note being rendering worthless.
I seem to remember that if you wash a bundle of notes, the bank would be able to separate them, ascertain exactly what notes and how many there are before crediting your account. Why would they not be able to do this for a laminated note?
As far as I'm aware this is still legal currency. Any ideas where I go from here?
Thanks.

Can you not just remove the laminate?0

Change it with your idiotic mate for a normal fiver and let it be his problem!0

I have cut the laminate down to the edge of the note but it appears to be bonded. I don't want to risk tearing the note if I have other options.0

Please Google "removing laminate from paper" and read a couple of the pages and youtube video!0

Thanks Johan007, never thought of that. I'll give it a go.0

The Bank of England will exchange damaged or mutilated banknotes.

You have to decide whether a Fiver is worth all that palaver.0 -
Thanks bengal-stripe, spot on. I'll use this as a last resort. It's funny how a £5 note becomes more valuable the closer we get to the festive period!0
