Bank charges

Hi, I was wondering if anyone could give me some of their opinions. Nearly 9 years ago when I moved in our house with my wife we tried getting a joint bank account with her bank but they declined us, so I just got my work to pay my wages into her bank.
I know the banks won at court for bank charges but I was just wondering if there could be any loopholes anywhere that could get us some money back as they have been taking my money too even though technically I don't bank with them.
Thanks, Lee :)

You'll need to explain a bit more, what money of yours has been taken? You certainly won't have a claim as it's not your account, but it's possible that your wife could, but as yet there's nowhere near enough information to decide that.

Legally, the minute the money has been paid into your wife's account, it becomes her money.
  • Ok thanks guys, I was just wondering. Just one more question though, I've heard banks should be charging no more than £35 at a time, is this right? Because some months we're getting charged £50, other even £75!!

Not sure whether there is any guidance on the max charge per item, but in any one month you can clock up charges for a number of different items. You should read the fee and charges leaflet of your bank, which you can find online and in branch, or phone for a copy.

You/your wife should also have a look at the credit file. Try noddle.co.uk - it is free, you do not have to buy anything there. Ignore their ads.
  • Please may i ask for some help? I have dyscalculia, so for this reason, i don't check my bank account, i just go by the principle if the hole in the wall works i have money. Its embarrassing for me to even type this here let alone ask for anyone to help me with checking my account.
Anyways i received a letter from my bank at the weekend and i have £300 charges for direct debits that were not paid last month, they need the money on the 22nd and I don't get paid until the 25th.
I spoke with their collections team today and they have said that for my to pay in increments would mean the account would have to closed until the balance has been paid of, this is the only bank account and where my mortgage goes out from.
Is there anything i can do? I have sold my iPad on Mazuma today to raise £100, I do have a £500 overdraft but i am scared if i use that to pay these charges, direct debits this month will bounce and i pay even more charges? apparently it states in their literature its £25 charge for each direct debit. It is with Cahoot so they are purely online banking.
Sorry if this is the wrong place for posting this question

So that means 12 unpaid direct debits, is that correct? Why has this happened this month and not previously, has your pay date changed? If this is going to be happening every month now then you need to start talking to the people who take the DDs to see if they can move them a few days later in the month (make sure it's at least 1, and preferably 2 or 3, days later than your pay date).

As to paying the current charges, first of all I would try speaking to Cahoot to see if they will waive some or all of them to get the amount you owe down. After that, it might be worth making an appointment with the Citizen's Advice Bureau so that they can go through the figures and hopefully advise on the best way forward.
