Someone parked in my private parking space

Hi,

I live in a flats with an allocated parking space. I was away over the weekend and have returned to find someone parked in my space. Having spoken to neighbours they tell me they've been there for several days and have previously left the car in another bay for over a week. They didn't know who owned the car or what flat they are from.

I've put a note on the window saying don't park there but, as yet, the owner hasn't returned to their car. Any suggestions how to progress with this? I'll be contacting the management company but doubt they can do much as we don't have any kind of permit system.

Let down at least two tyres, they are unlikely to do it again.

Get a trolley jack and some wheel dollys like this

and carefully move the car some where else (perhaps there some double yellow lines convenient nearby where the car could be put?)
  • If the space is allocated to you, is there anything to show this, maybe your flat number or car registration somewhere around the bay for all to see?

I suspect the owner already knows the bay belongs to another tenant.

Yes you could possibly do what has already been suggested, but my advice would be to tread carefully as they obviously have no respect for who's parking bay it is. Letting down tyres or moving their car may make the situation worse.

Could you possibly park in such away as to block them and not other users and leave a contact number so they can contact you. You can then at least request they do not park there any more.

I suppose it depends on how far you want it to escalate. In today's world a lot of people have no respect for anybody else except themselves.

Yes, the bay clearly shows the flat number so they'll know it belongs to someone else, they've probably taken a chance that no-one is living there because my car wasn't there over the weekend. No excuse though as sounds like they've done it before.

I would block them but it would block other bays so can't really do that. I think my options are limited as I've no idea whose car it is.

If they don't move it in the next 24 hours I'm willing to escalate but not considering criminal damage as a current resolution.
  • You can sue the driver for trespass, though you would be limited to your actual losses. E.g. if you had to put your car in a P&D car park, you could sue for that cost plus other fees, such as DVLA access fee. The amount will not come to much, though, and it'd be a lot of hassle, but it could put the willies up the owner if they received such a claim.

Quick update, just looked out the window and saw the car driving off , you could see the marks on the window where they'd removed the note I attached. Hopefully they got the msg. Bloody annoying though when people do that and not much you can do when its private land.
  • @ The Slithy Tove. Yes if they continue to do it will look at doing something like that. Cheers.

Wouldn't want to go down the PPC route with the car park but it has got worse lately with visitors parking where they want.
  • Could you not place a traffic cone in the bay when you are not using it?

You could possibly put a notice on the cone also. so they will read it if they are cheeky enough to just move it out the way

Not sure whether your lease would allow, but have you thought about installing a lockable post for when you leave your space?

    Less than £40 on eBay.

  • Good suggestions, cheers. A cone could possibly be the remedy when i go away at weekends. Like you say, depends how cheeky they are, but would likely put most off.

I'd have to check with the management company about the post as no-one else has one.
