Well done, what a fantastic achievement!
  • Well done! You could ask your parents for a reduced settlement figure as well ! ;-) or, as i once said to my parents, 'i'll repay you with love, no?' No, that didn't work...Congrats :-)
  • As we are now coming towards the end of February and I paid the last of my 'proper' i.e. non parent related debt off in early December I thought I would provide an update.

Over Christmas I was suddenly in the position where I needed a car. The cruddy old Ford Focus that my Dad owned but that I drove most of the time was sold and not replaced, as my dad has a work van and mum has a nice car they both use, so he didn't need a replacement. I needed a car though.

Luckily my sister's old car was just sitting on the driveway as she had moved to London in September last year and she was planning to sell the car. I was happy to buy it off her (it's only a little old Fiat Punto) and gave her the £500 she wanted for it. OK so it's far from the car of my dreams but it's been in my family (Aunty, then my dad, sister and now me) from new so I know the history of it.

I paid her in full and still managed to do Christmas presents and get through to the end of January, however I didn't pay any money off my debts.

At the end of January after getting paid I got back on track though and paid my parents £600. Not quite the £1,000 I had planned but I had a stag do to attend in the first weekend of February that I knew would be expensive so I wanted to allow for that. With a week to go until payday I still have around £180 left so I might top up my parents with another £100, taking the total to £700 from my end of January pay.

Come next week I fully intend on transferring the full £1,000 this month as I have no expensive things due in the coming month.

In the coming months I have an expensive wedding at the end of March to attend and have reduced March's payment to £700 (if needed) and then in April I will get a small payrise in my salary (around £55 ish per month) so I will add that and a little more to take the months after that to £1,075 a month. The car MOT and service will be due in May but I'll just take a hit on my social life or something to cover that, nothing major that I know of needs doing and it's a cheap old car so if it did I would just scrap it!

If I do that I can be debt free by the end of June (making my last payment in June of £1,118.57. Two months off my target date of the end of April when I first wrote on this thread but not too bad.

I can't wait for that day! I will be :j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j
  • Amazing effort, I can really relate to pretending to be able to juggle lies and repayments. Especially as I was hiding it all from my wife.

I was so lucky to have my wife find out my mess and start the journey of respecting the people I love and money. In my opinion it all goes hand in hand.

Enjoy being debt free, I will join you in four years time.

    Quick update -

Have paid my parents a total of £2,000 now with £3,500 to go. I had a month off in April as I went away on holiday, but transferred £1,000 at the beginning of May.

I still have around £440 left in my account until pay day so might try and do the odd £166 to take a third off that last £500.

End of this month after pay day I will be transferring £1,000 again, so should be done by July now. I know it's slipped slightly, and I sometimes feel a bit guilty for that, but I'm not far away now and unlike in the past I didn't use any credit to pay for it!

I will come back and update again soon and thank you again for listening to my very long story!

  • Update time!

I did a quick tally after paying my parents after payday last week and realised I was now in the clear and had in fact over paid them by some £280. Of course given all their previous help I do not mind this one bit and told them to keep the extra!

I have done it!!!!!!! :j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j I am finally debt free woooooo :D

Thank you for all the previous positive posts and this forum in general, it's been a huge, huge help.
