Burning to write-once CD/DVDs

Is there a basic difference between burning a single file (a movie) to a CD-R and several files to a larger capacity DVD-R at once? I had this problem where my first attempt to burn a compilation of large files was aborted half way through by the burning program (Nero) and the disc is unusable as a result - Yet burning to CD-Rs has been 100% successful so far. So if I'm going to try burning compilations to DVD-R again I need to know the chances of success or failiure in advance or else give up on 'single use' media and go back to rewritable media.
Do quality and price (of discs) make a real difference here?
Thanks

I use any old discs these days and don't have a problem very often. I use Nero, a Pioneer 109 either + or - discs but I never burn at full speed - usually half the rating on the disc.
Works for me.0
