Travel Money

Hi,

I had a question about buying travel money with a credit card online, through a site like: https://www.changegroup.co.uk/travelMoney/.

Would this show up as a purchase, or would it be like a cash advance? In other words would I pay any interest on it on my 0% card?

  • Depends on your card issuer, so ask them.

Or get a Halifax Clarity Credit Card, research ATM availability at your destination and go from there.

At the bottom of that page are some terms and conditions. Suggest you read them, especially condition 9.

They do suggest that in the aforementioned condition 9, which is strange since they're the ones whose systems will dictate which MCC is assigned to the transaction?

Alas, I'm not familiar enough with the range of codes used. But it's a good point.

That said, given there's a 2.5% up front credit card fee there's not a hope of me ever buying currency with a credit card from this retailer.

    Be carefull! Cash advances include:

    1. cash withdrawal at an ATM and
    2. over the bank counter
    3. gambling
    4. sending money electronically like western union
    5. purchasing foreign currency eg at an airport
    6. purchasing travellers cheques
