I bought a pear tree from Asda during the week, it's about 4'6" tall and was £5. I thought it was quite good and just been out to plant it. Om the label it's a 'Concorde' and says for pollination i'm going to need a 'Doyenne du Comice'; 'Gorham'; 'Williams'
Am i going to have to go out and buy another now if i want fruit. I've got lots of other things ..... Apples; Cherries; Plums; Peach and a hedge with about 6/8 different berries, will none of those be any good.

No unfortunately only another pear tree can pollinate your tree however there may be other pear trees in other people gardens within bee range so you may still get some pollination and some fruit from it although there is a saying " plant pears for your heirs" as they can take some years (5-10) to fruit reliably in any quantity.

Ok thanks, i've not noticed any of the neighbours with pears. I had a space and already got 2 apples; 2 cherries; a peach and a plum so was just looking for something different, not sure i've got the space for a second tree.

On the other hand we planted half a dozen trees three (?) years ago and started to espalier them. Last year three of them put on a little fruit and we let them keep a few so we could taste one of each.

These year we have had so many on the invincible and the humbug ( only disappointment is that the humbug ripened early) and the sensational that our dogs were getting some as well as us eating them daily. One of the others had a couple of fruit, and the others, haven't. I'm happy with that. :) They haven't yet reached the height or width I'm training them to, so once I start being more restrictive we'll see what happens.

Train it.......need very little space for a cordon, or a step over or something, you just need the pollination partner you choose to train to be spur bearing not tip bearing.

I was a bit daunted , but really its not life or death, the trees are fairly forgiving, and its pretty good fun.

I haven't the space to let it grow, but that sounds like a good idea, i could always find enough space for that.
I'm going to Asda again in the morning, i'll see what else is there.

    Hi

Concorde may well be self-fertile anyway, so you do not need another tree http://www.ashridgetrees.co.uk/fruit-trees/pear-trees and

    http://www.brogdaleonline.co.uk/shop/concorde/

I would go by Brogdale rather than Asda.

And do search google for "cordon pear trees" so you can see how little room you need.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing
