This might not be the right forum, so apologies in advance, but I remember that he camera identifier hardware was illegal in France. If so, is the Tom Tom One?

Radar detectors are illegal in France. The TomTom isn't a detector, it just stores a database of camera locations and shows you when you are near one of those locations. If a new camera is put in since you last updated your database TomTom won't know it's there.

So as I understand it there's no problem using TomToms in France.

(but I am prepared to be corrected if needs be)

I'd agree with that logic, I don't see how they could make the TomTom One illegal without it also being illegal for you to mark cameras on a paper map which is essentially what it is, just an electronic version.

The tomtom one camera database is an optional extra - it would be very hard for someone to know that it was installed unless they were in the car as it moved past a "safety zone" the best policy if it is raised is acting stupid - usually works for me !
