Probably needs to be in the mobile section but the way Apple lock phones is done on the Apple server, not in the phone.
Any site offing a service is really using a main inside the network doing them on the site. The only people who can do it legitimately (i.e. so there's no chance of it re-locking later) are O2. Please don't spend money elsewhere when O2 should do it for free.0 -
I bought the phone off eBay, and am not an O2 customer so i don't think I will get it for free!!!
Can they do it in store???
Thanks for the replys0 -
Might be worth contacting the vendor; if they had the phone on contract for a year they can do it via the O2 web site for nothing.
Exactly the same happened to me; none of the mobile shops (O2 included) were very helpful and I didn't fancy a dodgy third-party unlock that might potentially brick the phone, so I called the guy I bought it from, who was happy to oblige once he knew how easy it was. Heh, if he'd known that to start with, he might've got a better price for the phone.0 -

As has already been explained, its not done physically to the phone but remotely with Apple's servers. Once the network releases it then the next time the phone connects to the iCloud or an internet connected iTunes then it will unlock itself.
O2 and Vodafone both have back office teams that do the actual request to Apple and their Live Chat, telephone and in store staff are likely to be able to send the request to them - i've had the first two do it for me. If you particularly want to go in store for some reason then I am sure they can email their back office team if they agree to help.0
