It is you'r money you are spending.

You may spend it as you wish.

Eh? I spent money on an INDEPENDENT damp surveyor to come and look at a few small issues. Those issues DIDN'T include rising damp, so I asked him if he believed rising damp actually existed. His reply was that IT DOES EXIST, but it is not as widespread as damp proofing companies lead people to believe.

Not to get stuck into this but the issue with an Independant damp surveyor is that their job is: To survey damp.

Those that say that there is no such thing as rising damp would compare it to getting an Independent Exorcist around to check if you have a ghost problem.

On the other hand if you've had someone out who's job is to find ghosts and they've cleared it you're pretty safe on that.

  • Yes, but he has no vested interest in telling me that the condensation we were experiencing behind the kitchen cupboards was rising damp (the surveyor the bank sent round said the place suffered from rising damp).

Instead he told us what it was and what to do about it. If anything he saved us money.

Just to re-iterate my point, for those who think rising damp categorically doesn't exist, it does, just not to the extent we are led to believe.

Nothing you've said proves/demonstrates that, which is admittedly a very high bar to jump over. Buildings are a very badly researched and documented area, evidence based construction is yet to really be invented. The question of rising damp remains unanswered.

You have shown why an independent surveyor is better than one who may have a vested interest in doing the work. Which is a point that's always worth reminding ourselves.

And nothing has been said that proves it doesn't exist. Like I said, I'll take the word of a qualified surveyor and two professional tradesmen (who also had no vested interest when asked).

    I'm out.

I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.
