Dishwasher research - best value ones I could find (not cheap!)

So, our Bosch dishwasher died suddenly this week, after 17 years' service and I spent the first part of this weekend researching something to replace it. Not an ideal way to spend a Friday evening and Saturday morning, but for what it's worth, here's what I narrowed it down to, in case anyone else has similar criteria, maybe this will be of some help/interest:
It had to be:
Good reviews and/or brand we've come to trust (narrowed it down to basically Bosch or Miele).
Standard size - didn't care if it was freestanding or integrated, as we have a panel that we could use, but don't really care too much either way.

And then I started looking. I ended up wandering into the Miele £1000+ territory  but got out of there pretty quick!

For us, it came down, in the end to:
Bosch freestanding: SMS69L32GB. Which 'best buy', great online reviews. On at Buywise, Banbury for £524.85 (&£30 delivery to us as we're a long way away). Bosch cashback at the moment on this machine is £100, which brings the total to £454.85.

I emailed John Lewis to see if they'd do a price match - I think they should do, as it's a store as well as an internet company. JL price is £599.

Bosch fully integrated: SMV65E00GB. Which 'best buy', but fewer rave online reviews, and a few grumbles. Appliances Direct £548.98, less £70 Bosch cashback brings it to £472.98. (You can get another £19 reduction by doing a Which trial registration through their site).

Miele G4210 Freestanding; John Lewis £451, less £50 cashback, bringing it to £401. Free delivery, but a week to wait :( (It's £2 cheaper at co-op electrical, I think, but I'd lost the will to live by this time. The assistant in John Lewis was very good, too - far more helpful and careful listener than the fool at Currys who was determined to sell me a Hotpoint!)

In the end, having had a good old trawl on the net and also looking at the real things in the stores, we went for the Miele; to us it seemed more sturdy than the Bosch machines, and the appliances we've had from them in the past have certainly provided good value.

The other machines we really liked were this LG one: http://www.lg.com/uk/dishwashers/lg-D1454TF - it felt really well made, too, but a couple of online reviews mentioned catastrophic error messages about one year which meant the machines failed, so we steered away from that in the end. The Siemens dishwashers also seemed robust in the showrooms, and were the most similar in feel to our current one, which we have been very happy with.

Anyway, I hope that all of this is of some use/interest to someone. As for me, I'm off to cook dinner in a disposable tray and serve it on paper plates :rotfl::rotfl:

I have the same Miele as you're getting. Don't think you'll be disappointed, ours is great, far better than the Bosch it replaced.
  • If you only looked at two brands its hardly in depth research is it?

As would I, but I would also look at lots of others as well.

Last time I did it (5 years ago) it was a Beko one that came out as best value for money for me (and yes I was surprised too)

    I didn't say it was.

What I said was 'This is what I found out today. If it's any use to you, please feel free to use it'. I hope I won't be needing it again myself any time soon.

If you came here looking for in depth research, well, I apologise. I left the in-depth research to Which and to Good Housekeeping Institute recommendations, which was the starting point I used, and then based the wholly personal choices I made on my own preferences, and what I felt out when I went into the stores, having a look at as many machines from Bosch, Miele and other manufacturers in the shops as I could be fagged to find and open and look at, as well as their products and reviews online.

S'up to you what do with with it. Nothing, I imagine, for you, and that's just fine.

  • Thanks for sharing. :T I hate making decisions on electrical appliance purchases.

I'm always baffled when people post who seem to have no need for the information in a thread & nothing to add for the people who may.

    Also:
    1) The OP mentions being in a store & being advised on a Hotpoint machine & also that he considered specific Siemens & LG machines too so this response simply isn't correct.
    2) The OP doesn't say that what he's presented is "in depth" research.

Fair enough, I suppose it is the thread title that misled me
