Connecting iPad Air to TV via Powerline?

I suspect the answer is probably no, but here goes.

Just wondering if it is possible to connect an iPad Air to a TV or to a BT Box without having to shell out £35 for the Apple Lightening to HDMI cable? I don't need to use it a lot, it's just for the odd football match on BT Sport that would be better watched on the TV.

I did think of trying it using the Lightening to USB connector in a plug, then seeing if this would connect via a Powerline plug to the BT Box (which already uses a Powerline connection for catch up TV).

I would imagine that Apple has this stitched up so that TV/Video can't be sent through the Lightening/USB cable, but have not seen this option discussed elsewhere.

Many thanks.

    'It doesn't work like that'.
USB is for data, not pictures. To confuse things, lightning, and even USB down the line, will be able to carrry pictures, but suffice to say, your TV's USB port is for hard drives and memory sticks, it's not a video input - that would be the HDMI port that you don't want to use. Surely you can watch BT Sport on your BT box?!
Anyway for connecting the iPad, you want that cable, or an Apple TV which will mean you can do it wirelessly.
Sky will block the iPad from displaying SkyGo content on your TV though, just for info, and maybe others do?

Thanks for confirming. I did suspect that it would be a case of shelling out the £30-£40 for the Apple cable, but I guess for the few times I get to watch the football on BT Sport, it's not really worth it.

If you have a BT box, why can't you watch BT Sport on that?

Unfortunately we don't have BT Infinity where I would be able to watch via the box (unless there is a way around this!!!!).

If your internet speed isn't up to much you won't be able to watch it on any device anyway. What's your speed? On demand TV won't be much good (and you'll be downloading, not streaming) below 2Mb/s.
  • When using OS7 I could connect my iPad2 to the TV via adapter and HDMI cable and watch missed programmes via iPlayer.
However since updating to OS8 this has not been possible since Apple seems to have put a 'block' on this facility.
Does anyone know how to overcome this problem or do we have to wait for a 'fix' from Apple?
Interested to learn others views as there must be lots in the same position.
