Tax code query

Hi all,

I am having a few issues right now financially and I am doing the 'get my head out of the sand' bit at the moment.

I am looking at everything just now and I don't wish to post all of it as it's pretty complicated.

I have a question though about my tax code.

Every few years I get a tax rebate so obviously my code has been wrong for some time.
I suspect this is the case just now also.

I do not understand tax codes at all.
How do I check if mine is correct or get it looked into without spending hours on hold on a phone call?

Also, if you do think it's wrong can you check this with them at any time or is it only when they send you your code?

I've taken a look at their site and I can't even figure out what to do.

I know this all sounds very dumb and that this is stuff I should just know about but can anyone help?

  • You have not given enough information to get useful answers. You may get rebates even if your tax code is correct if there are gaps in employment.

    Have you seen the above?

You can always write rather than call?

for 'normal' people in employment with simple circumstances then your tax code would be 1000 L

    what is yours?

Do you have more than once source of income? I'm guessing that 1945 is your year of birth so you would already be receiving the state pension? That in itself will affect your tax code if you have another source of income.

If your year of birth is 1945, then you are entitled to the higher personal allowance of £10,500 which would equate to a tax code of 1050P. However the state pension will reduce this tax code as the state pension is paid gross but is taxable along with other income. How much do you get for state pension?

You can check it with them at anytime. However more than one source of income can be tricky to manage and you may well be on the correct tax code but still need some adjustments at times.

If you give more info we can help.
  • Sorry,

I've been trying to find my way around the HMRC website.

Right, I was born in 1969, not 1945 (Poppy and 1945 relate to it being Rememberance Sunday tomorrow).

I am not on a pension.

I have worked for just one employer for the past 6.5 years with no breaks in employment in that time. I was unemployed for six months prior to that but did not sign on.

In 2013 for instance and going from payslips while digging paperwork out my tax code was 843L in April 13, 829L in November 13 and then went to HMRC changed it in January 14 to 895L and then changed it again in July 14 to 896L.

I have medical cover currently at 1031 for this year.
So it looks to be right just now but due to all of these changes I am unsure whether things have been correct in the past and why it has changed during the tax year.

Fair enough - I had thought of that too but went for what might have been more obvious seeing that Remembrance Sunday and poppies date back to the 1st World War as opposed to the 2nd.

It's absolutely spot on for this tax year. £10000 allowance minus £1031 medical cover gives £8969 so tax code of 896L.

P11d (the form that is submitted for all taxable benefits are required to be done by July, hence the change of tax code in July 2014. This is normal procedure and will involve a slight change every year. It also accounts for underpayments/overpayments.

There is nothing to worry about here.
