Carers Allowance

Hi folks... This is my First time posting. I received a letter today advising that my baby has been awarded the higher rate disability allowance.

It also talks about carers allowance.

When I applied for it. it says that other monies will be affected by the amount of allowance Im entitled to by the same amount, e.g. if i get £60 in carers allowance my other entitlements will go down by £60 but when I was on the entitled to website to do calculations of how I will be affected it shows with carers allowance I am still better off by almost 40quid a week so conflicting information. Does anyone have any other information on this or should I cancel my claim to carers allowance if its going to screw with my other benefits??

    What benefits are you receiving?

Carer's Allowance is counted as income for means tested benefits but you get a Carer's premium (extra money added to that benefit)

so, for instance, if you get Income support they count the Carer's Allowance as income and deduct it from your IS but then add a Carer's Premium.

So you would get Carer's Allowance + reduced IS + carer's premium making you better off.
  • ok. I get it now. I am on and off some benefits depending on my husband because he currently works agency style. so our HB goes up and down as does our tax credits etc. i didn't realise there was a carers premium

also it took almost 3 months to finally get awarded the higher rate disability component for my son, but on the tax credits website it says they only backdate for 31 days. I did tell them at the time that I had applied for the disability benefit. Does this delay mean I have lost out on almost 2 months worth of ctc disability?
  • Great, Thanks x
