Are TSB / Lloyds still linked, e.g. application checks?

Hi all

I wondered if anyone could confirm if TSB and Lloyds are still linked in any way?

I had a Lloyds TSB account which I defaulted on and I am still paying this back. I've also had debts with all of the other major banks, so I can't approach them at the moment.

I am looking at applying for a TSB Cash account. However, my local TSB branch was a former Lloyds TSB branch and has the same sort code as my defaulted account. I wondered if I would be considered as a completely new customer, or will their internal systems still show my outstanding debt (I know they can see from my credit file anyway).

I know that some banks are linked like Natwest, RBS etc, would TSB be linked to lloyds or are they now entirely separate?

Many thanks

Lloyds still own 50% of the shares of TSB, I believe

Both use the same online computer system too

But if you are in default and paying this back, it's probably on your credit file anyway, so anyone checking will see it.

Are you sure about TSB having the same sort code as a former Lloydstsb branch? Our local branch changed. It was 30-xx-xx (which is now just for Lloyds afaik,) with the TSB branch using 77-xx-xx for new accounts.

The sort codes went with their branches and they haven't changed, so both 30 XX XX codes and the 77 xx xx range can be either Lloyds or TSB depending on branch. My TSB a/c is a 77 one, but so is my mate's Lloyds a/c. It's impossible to tell from a 30 or 77 code whether it's TSB or Lloyds, unless you look the full code up on on one of the sort code checkers online.
  • Thanks for the replies everyone.

I'm repaying the debt to Lloyds, and it appears on my credit file as

"Lloyds Bank PLC (Was Lloyds TSB)"

Do you think I'd be treated as a new customer, such as a Natwest customer applying to Santander?

    Thanks

TSB won't be able to see Lloyds system, however as mentioned the default will still be on your credit file whoever you apply to.

Yes and will undergo the required credit checks as others have said.
  • All bad debts before the split were carried by Lloyds bank - TSB was/is a clean bank for this purpose - to help in the sale I presume.

    Jones is right.

TSB was created from all of LTSB Scotland (which was always a separate bank and company).

Lloyds Tsb (England &Wales) then transferred some of their accounts to TSB. If your default was with Lloyds Tsb (e&w) then they will probably only see the default through your credit file and won't necessarily know who it was with.
  • Thanks everyone for taking the time to answer my question.

I'll apply for an account this week. Hopefully I'll be treated as a new customer for two reasons

    1) to start afresh with a clean history with a new bank
    2) ensure that they cannot use funds from the TSB account to pay for the Lloyds debt

    Thanks

I was in the same situation as you, I owed lloyds tsb £300 because of a fraudulent transaction i even went to FOS and they still found in their favour.

I couldn't get a bank account with any bank but surprisingly I tried to apply for a standard account with TSB, I got refused and automatically accepted for the cash account and it was open within 10 minutes of me applying.

And that £300 debt hasn't effected my TSB account.

TSB left Lloyds Banking Group in summer 2013 though Lloyds still holds shares (50%) in what is now an external competitor group called 'TSB Banking Group'. Your funds in TSB are just as safe from the clutches of Lloyds as they are from any other bank.
