In the really cold winter a few years back I was keeping my whole house at 20 deg 24/7, keeping the conservatory warmed and as much hot water as I could use for the same cost as a 1.5 kW electric heater for 24 hours.

so if I turn on my central heating at 20 may be the same cost? which company do you use?

    thank you
  • For heating a whole house, gas will be much cheaper than electric in nearly all scenarios.

Gas price around 3.5-4p per KWH
    Electric Price 12-14p per KWH.

What heating set-up do you have? Central Heating? Combi Boiler? etc.

What is your yearly usage in KWH?

First, ensure you are on a competative tariff, that could save you a huge amount stright away!

Then look at what you use and where you can save.

That means your were heating your whole house (@20 deg) + conservatory + hot water using only ~4.5kW?

Wow - I sometimes use that much power heating one room (admittedly not for long as it gets too hot :rotfl: ).

How big is the house ?
How many people are living in it ?
Are you in all day or out at work ?
How warm is warm ? Different people are happy with different temps.
What do you wear whilen you're in the house ?

5.5 kW, heating was on 24/7 with my trusty 1984 vintage boiler using 12 metric units per day. The whole of the house was at 18 - 22 and the conservatory was just background heat.
