I can't. Unless they are 90 or have a terminal illness, they're going to have to move at some point. They are not going to be able to function effectively in the modern age ....

Depends on what they want to do with their PC, surely?

Me, I need a PC to web browse, rip CDs, and move files around, essentially. Why would I need to move on through every 'new' version of Windoze to do that?

It's possible the old machine can't run later versions of windows and the owner can't cope with Linux. If they are also skint they'll stick with what they have. Buying a later windows licence for an old machine makes little economic sense anyway IMO.

In the run up to the year 2000 I made a nice living fixing code that only had two digits for the year in programs that had originally been written anything up to 30 years before :)
You'll have another opportunity as 2038 approaches then.

Because there'll come a point, at some point in your future, when your favourite website doesn't support the most recent browser you have available, or requires some codec you don't have. Or assuming the destination for your CD is some sort of MP3 player, there'll come a point where your MP3 player needs replacing and the new one isn't supported on the OS you have available. That's not going to happen in five years' time, but do you seriously believe it won't happen in twenty?
