There are loads of DIY investor books around, if you buy older ones or US editions then they can be picked up for as little as £3 a go - even shipped from US (Amazon/Abebooks/Ebay). As well as the Hale book, Lars Kroijer Investing Demystified is UK centric, both cover passives a very good US book is All About Asset Allocation Rick Ferri, Roger Gibson Asset Allocation is good if weighty. Other authors worth having a look at are William Bernstein. Burton Malkeil, etc. - most are US centric so you will need to reduce home bias, but will give you a few ideas. Your risk level, time horizon and asset allocation are major factors.

If you want one stop shop - Vanguard, Architas, Blackrock do risk based managed funds.
