What do you mean by good people? As for shops, more in Romford. However I think Upminster is a nicer place. You can get trains from both into London.
Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.
  • If you can afford it Hornchurch is nicer than both
  • upminster. No question.

It's Essex. There's chavs everywhere. The only difference between Romford chavs and upminster chavs is that upminsters chav's uggs are likely to be real.

Seriously though, I work in Romford. Market day(s) are when they all come out. If you don't get run over by a pensioner with a mobility scooter, you'll get banged into with a pram by one of the grey tracksuited mums with a fag on....
  • I would definitely choose upminster, I think it's much nicer, but obviously prices reflect that.

Upminster has a small high street, a few coffee shops, a small waitrose & M&S food etc. It also has good schools. Cranham is slightly more affordable housewise and still very accessible for upminster.

Romford has a big shopping centre, although when I used to live nearby we always went to lakeside (free parking, better restaurants). Housing is cheaper, but there's a lot of nightlife which can cause problems (although maybe a positive if you're young and looking for that).

Who cares when Romford is only a 10 minute drive away?

Romford is ok for shopping but I wouldn't want to live there. And Lakeside isn't that far either if you want to shop.

Upminster and parts of Hornchurch are easily the nicest parts in that general area.

Hornchurch is generally a nicer place to go out for a meal or drink too. Romford is just fall of chavs and drunks.

Good schools around Upminster, particularly Coopers (although I would say that, I went there 15 years ago).

Upminster is very nice. There are very good transport links to London and to Romford. Lots of coffee shops, restaurants, a park and a department store. It's not chavvy and it's quite a safe town with good schools. Lots of city workers, families and retirees live there.

Romford has lots of facilities; supermarkets, restaurants, clubs and bars, cinemas, a bowling alley, etc. There's a shopping centre and the market, as well as very good transport links to the surrounding areas and to London. However it's not as nice as Upminster, it's a bit rough and there's more noise and disruption from the nightlife. I wouldn't want to live there but on the outskirts is ok.

Hornchurch, Gidea Park and Harold Wood are nearby and a compromise if you can't afford Upminster but don't want to live in Romford. They are quite nice and Hornchurch town centre has cafes and restaurants, plus there's a sports centre. It's easy to travel in to Romford to use the facilities, or to go to Stratford Westfield or Lakeside instead.
Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!
