As other have said gaming hasn't really got more expensive considering the prices for Snes and Megadrive games during that era. I had bought Snes Japanese imports from local game stores at prices like £100 :o and later Playstation imports cost around £60. But thanks to the internet I now have easy access to Japanese retailers I just got a Japanese PS4 game in from a retailer in Tokyo for £40 before the internet I would have probably paid the Japanese retail price plus VAT and a bit on top as profit for the UK shop.

For a game I know I'm going to get a lot of time out of with a decent special edition that I want to get into quickly then I'd pay around £60 to £70. That's a very rare case these days and really only for online titles where it's best to get into the game when it's new, a few months down the line when the game is cheaper the online population can have died down considerably and/or the remaining players are those who have been playing the game a while making it difficult to get started.

Generally I don't pay much for games as they drop quickly in price, I remember back in the early SNES/N64 days when the starting prices were high (still remember the £64.99 price tag on Street Fighter 2) and they didn't really drop that much. Admittedly a lot of that is down to not having huge competition not just up and down the country but online as well, I remember the days of buying games magazines and always excitedly looking through the listings for the likes of Special Reserve to see if they had sale/clearance prices on any games I was after.

With the exception of expansions to WoW (which I do still play off and on), I won't pay more than £15 for any game.

£5 for me, unless it was a glitch. Means i might have to waita while to play most games, but at least allbugs are fixed. I bought the mass effect trilogy for £7 (pc of course)! Skyrim for £2! When you can buy the best game series ever made for £7 its hard to justify £45 for crap fifa or call of duty which is entertaining for an hour or two, and even more so getting a console.

Looking at the amount of hours entertainment they give me it's actually a pretty reasonable past-time. I soent £20 on Skyrim (came late to that party as promised myself I'd finish other games first) and put in a good 150 hours.

My best bargain game was Fallout 3 for about £2... definitely got my money's worth there :)

If it was something I knew I'd get the hours in, I'd pay £50 or so.
  • I worked out a couple of months ago that I have spend £614.92 over 7 years playing World of Warcraft which technically is one game.

I paid £50 for The Elder Scrolls Online and played it for a month as I didn't get on with it so I think those two are my most expensive buys.

I used to think nothing of spending £50-60 on a game, double if it was a collectors edition.

Nowadays it is only for a treat or present normally not more than £15.

I always compare games to movies, you could spend £15 for a movie ticket and have 1-2 hours enjoyment out of it.

Buy a decent game you can have more like 30-60 hours, and it is more social and more enjoyable.
  • I live in oz and games cost like $90+ or so... only would pay that if i planned to play online
  • No, that's simply not true, any more than "UK games cost like £50+". You could pay that much, if you put in some effort and looked around to find games at RRP, but it's not difficult to grab games in Australia at decent prices - although rarely at the £5-10 bargain bin prices the UK often has.

There are plenty of Oztralien stores that have discounted games. Pre-orders at EB Games are expensive, but they have plenty of discounts and sales throughout the year. Then non-gaming stores such as Target and Hardly Normal have regular clearances where you can grab quality console games for AU$20 (about £11).

In 2011 and 2012, with the collapsed GBP and strong AU$, it was easy to have games imported from the UK via eBay or Game or Shopto.net for less than local prices, allowing some real bargains to be had, and although the currencies are sliding closer to each other again now, it's still possible to take advantage of UK sales (and don't forget, both regions are PAL and share the same region-locks (with one or two Germany-esque exceptions)).

And, of course, there's nothing preventing you from buying account-based games online just like everyone else - and, really, that's where the best bargains are. Steam, XBL, PSN, Amazon.com, Gamersgate, Humble Store - none of these are "blocked" in Australia (yet ;)). Today you could grab half-a-dozen PC games for AU$1.12 from the Humble Bundle - a far cry from the "$90+" you claim. This week you can get free The Witcher 2 from GOG, and so far this month we've been given free Mount & Blade, Little Big Adventure and Realms of the Haunting - all available in Australia. Assassin's Creed: Unity is available for under AU$35 (although, seriously, wait! Buggy, badly-performing mess of an alright game).

DO you live in Oz? I'm not so sure... ;)

Edit: ooh, look, every game AU$10! (Physical games in Australia)
