Please help....been up all night with this and am frazzled!
I've been using Hotmail/LiveMail for years to get my emails (talktalk email is forwarded to there too), but since yesterday, everytime I open my main email , it downloads thousands and thousands of old emails from up to a year ago. Now I have over 40,000 emails in my inbox. No matter how many times I try to delete them they come pinging back immediately. How do I stop this from happening? The same thing is happening on my desktop (Vista), my iPhone and iPad. All my updates are up to date and I have not made any changes myself. Everything has been working fine for years til yesterday. My ISP is TalkTalk.
I have spent many exhausting hours Googling to try to find a solution and so far all I have managed to do is find a workaround for the desktop by opening a new folder, (called it 'old emails'), then selecting and moving all the thousands of emails in the inbox into it so that now I just get new emails in my inbox. (There does seem to be a finite number that downloads or is there a cut off date....??) It seems that so long as these particular old emails are there somewhere then no new 'old' ones are downloaded. Haven't managed to do this on the iPad or phone.
Apologies if this sounds very muddled....very, very tired and fraught!!!
Any help would be much appreciated but please note I am not very technically minded!

If my memory is correct I think outlook may have been involved, but am trying to get hold of friend to ask. Remember them almost losing the plot at the time so will post back as soon as I can. Hang on in there.0

On your web email do you not have a setting something like keep/ delete mails from server .0

Yes, and I have it set to 'delete emails from server'.... It's all very strange!
Also strange...after opening a new folder on desktop and moving all the old downloaded emails into it I deleted those emails from that folder and they have stayed deleted....! Can't do it on the phone or iPad tho. Every time I try to delete them they come back immediately.0 -
They can only "come back" from a web mail server (or a "cloud" backup server). So determine in which of your webmail accounts they are residing and delete them there.0

Had a word with friend and they had an almost identical problem that took hrs to sort.
What they had to do was create a folder and drag and drop each email to separate file. Then go into each device and ensure that email settings were identical. Ensuring that it is set as imac and not pop.
It appears to be something to do with each device trying to synch and Outlook seems to be the culprit and they have had to stop using it when possible.
I hope some of that makes sense if not I'll try and talk to friend again tomorrow as tonights call had to be cut short.
Oh and friend also had iphone, windows laptop and ipad so your issue sounds identical.
Still trying to sort my own lappy issues, so frustrating when you're not very techy and things go haywire.0 -
Many thanks rufydoofyM for going to all that trouble. It seems to confirm that lots of people have had this problem too. I keep trying things but no luck as yet with the phone or iPad. The desktop and lappy seem OK after creating the new folder and then deleting the emails from there. The trouble is all the settings etc were done so long ago I haven"t a clue now exactly what I did! I'd love to know why this has happened all of a sudden after years of running smoothly. Will keep trying anyhoo. Hope you have better luck with your problems.
Thanks again
