Can't switch - MPRN problem. Help!

Options
I've tried to switch twice now to a different supplier as my bills with Southern Electric are way higher than others.

Each time the new company has stated that I don't currently have a gas supply. When I reply that I do and supply the meter point reference number on the back of my SE gas bill they say it doesn't exist.

I called SE and they confirmed that the MPRN I am using is correct and the only one they have. Given I need it to switch they are being less than helpful in what else they can do as clearly sorting the issue means that I will be able to move companies.

What can I do? Who else can I contact to get the MPRN validated or entered on the correct system? Until I can sort it I'm stuck with SE and ridiculous prices. :(

Check the number on your actual meter first .
  • The MPRN is not on the meter itself. Already tried using the one on the meter and it doesn't help.

You've been given some good advice already, but in the meantime, you could always move to a more competitive tariff supplied by SSE (beware of early exit fees if you plan to switch supplier shortly)

You don't say where you are located or your consumption, but looking at for London region

    Higher gas user
SSE direct (dual fuel, 12 months, £30 Early Exit Fee)
    Unit charge: 3.665p per kWh
Standing charge: 25.76p per day (£94.01 per year) after discounts

    Lower gas user
Ebico Equigas (no early exit fee)
    Unit Charge: 5.408p per kWh
    No standing charge

These don't seem too "ridiculous" compared to say one of the notorious cheap gas suppliers like Daligas (no early exit fee, will not supply IGT customers)

    Unit Charge: 3.308p per kWh
Standing charge: 19.16p per day (£69.93 per year)

Use a comparison site to find the best tariff supplied by SSE for you ... or just give them a ring (but they might not offer you some tariffs, such as the Ebico one, or M&S energy tariffs, unless you specifically ask about them)
