Car insurance - Insuring car at a different address

I live in London, and my parents live in Yorkshire, I was wondering if it is legal to take out an insurance policy on their spare car, for use when I go back to visit? Just to clarify, their address is the actual address the car would be registered and kept, I wouldn't be using it in London at my residential address, so I assume it would be OK?

At the moment I'm a named driver on their policy, but as I've got 7 years of NCB that is due to expire relatively soon, it would make sense to put the policy in my name if possible.

Thanks

  • Yes, you dont have to live where your car is kept but expect to pay an extra premium as a result. Online systems are rarely able to deal with this properly so it will probably drive you to buy over the phone
  • Thanks for your reply. I was mainly worried in case this sort of thing was seen as 'fronting' (and I wouldn't want a comparison site adding a search to my credit history if it's seen as a dodgy practise).

I'll still likely save a fair bit, it's about 5 times cheaper to insure there than if I took ownership and insured it in London!
  • Ahh, ok, if others are using it more than you due to its location then that also is fine as long as you correctly declare who the main driver is. Again not often able to be done online

Dont forget to mention the car is not yours. The online comparison sites sometimes assume, The cars is yours, Owned and registered in your name, You are the main driver etc etc..

Phone the insurer directly and explain its not your car. If there is a claim then expect more questions though. Why would someone in London insure a car up north?

How many times a year will you get to drive it?

  • If I did end up insuring it I could register it in my name. I'd drive it a few times a year probably, the main reason I'm thinking of doing it being so I don't lose 7 years of no claims.

Might not bother, it's just a thought at the minute and was wondering the legality of it, although it's a lot more cost effective than having a car in London (that I'd still hardly ever use). Maybe I should just resign myself to the fact that when I start driving again I'll be starting from scratch no claims wise.
