File Icons

Hi,

wanted to sort out my desktop and was just wondering if anyone knows where/how I might download some file icons or if it is possible to use my own pictures as icons.

Running Window 8.1

Thanks in Advance

    It should be simple.

Please bear in mind I'm paraphrasing here.

Ensure the picture you want to use is saved as a .ico file.

Select the icon you want to change and right click and select properties

Click on the change icon button

Point it at the new icon, the .ico file and click apply

That should be it but I'm sure someone who knows all the details will be along soon.

Cheers - but first problem is how do you save as a .ico file?

Well last time I did this I had a graphics package that could scale the image and save as .ico but that was years ago.

I don't know if it's still part of Windows but I seem to remember that Windows Paint could do it.

Alternatively there must be programs available that take a picture in and output an icon file.

There are literally thousands to chose from out there, a good starting point is http://www.iconarchive.com/

Create a folder in a suitable place on your machine (I too am using Windows 8.1 and have created mine on the 'Pictures' folder) and download your choices to that folder in the .ico format (you are given a choice of three formats).

    Then follow Mr Toad's directions.

    Hope this helps.

If you run Nir Sofer's IconExtract program (the download is almost at the bottom of the webpage) you could point it at your C: drive and be utterly amazed how many icons live in DLL and EXE files!

To save time, maybe point it just at C:\Windows...
